The land of the 7 colours

Salta, Jujuy and Tucumán are the provinces that form the Northwest region of Argentina. These are the provinces of the Argentine ‘Puna’ plateau, the valleys, gorges and mountains of unbelievable colours. The Indian heritage is also a distinctive mark. As this area is close to what once was the Inca Empire, the region is rich in archaeological fields of great value where important pieces from Pre-Colombian civilizations have been found. Some of these civilizations have survived to our days and their people live in small villages scattered along the immense gorges. They are devoted to agriculture and handicrafts and have developed their own distinctive designs. They work their looms making fine homespun fabrics with the wool of sheep, llamas and guanacos coloured with vegetable dyes. They also preserve the music, folklore and popular celebrations.
